BSc Chemistry with Mathematics
About this course
Chemistry with mathematics is a combination that takes seriously the quantitative foundations of modern chemical science. Chemistry is deeply mathematical at its core: quantum mechanics underpins our understanding of atomic and molecular structure, thermodynamics is expressed in equations, and the kinetics of chemical reactions is described by differential equations. For students who want to engage with chemistry at its most fundamental level, and who see mathematical fluency as an asset rather than a burden, this programme offers an unusually rigorous and intellectually satisfying path through the discipline. At Keele this three-year full-time programme develops a strong foundation in core chemical concepts, underpinned by advanced mathematics, to explore topics at the frontier of modern chemistry. You will study the principal branches of chemistry, including organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, alongside the mathematical tools that allow you to engage with the underlying theory at depth. Access to specialist computational tools and research-grade instrumentation gives the programme a practical and research-connected character, and dedicated professional development and employability modules ensure that your academic training is translated into professional confidence. A sandwich year provides the opportunity to spend a full year in an industry placement, and a year abroad allows you to study at an international partner institution. Work placements are integrated throughout, connecting your academic learning to the kinds of roles that await chemistry graduates in professional environments. The programme is being put forward for accreditation by the Royal Society of Chemistry. Graduates of chemistry with mathematics programmes are well positioned for careers in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, materials, and chemical industries, as well as in computational chemistry, environmental consultancy, data science, and research. Many continue to postgraduate study, including Masters or doctoral programmes in chemistry, materials science, or computational science.
