About this course
Studying two major world languages together is one of the most intellectually expansive things you can do at university. This degree at the University of St Andrews combines Chinese Studies with French, placing two very different linguistic and cultural traditions in productive dialogue. Chinese, one of the world's most widely spoken languages, carries with it a civilisation of extraordinary depth, while French opens access to a rich literary heritage and one of the most influential cultures in modern Europe. Together they give you a genuinely cross-cultural perspective that is increasingly valuable in a connected world. Your study of Chinese at St Andrews goes beyond language learning in the conventional sense. You will engage with the breadth and depth of Chinese linguistic and cultural practices, including visual and popular cultures alongside more traditional literary and historical material. Your study of French will similarly develop your command of the language while exploring literature, ideas, and cultural production across the French-speaking world. The degree lasts four years full-time and includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself in one or both language environments and deepen your fluency and cultural understanding through direct lived experience. The skills you develop in this programme are genuinely transferable. Linguistic precision, the ability to read across cultures, research skills, and the capacity to communicate with nuance are sought across many sectors. Graduates typically move into careers in international business, diplomacy, translation and interpreting, journalism, education, the civil service, and cultural organisations. Postgraduate study in linguistics, area studies, translation, or international relations is also a natural progression for those who wish to develop a specialism further.
