About this course
Civil engineering shapes the physical environment in which we live. Roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, water treatment plants, coastal defences, railways, and the foundations of buildings are all the work of civil engineers, who design, construct, and maintain the infrastructure that societies depend on. The discipline combines physics and mathematics with materials science, geotechnics, hydraulics, structural analysis, and project management, and it demands the ability to work at scales ranging from the behaviour of individual materials to the coordination of vast construction programmes. At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, reflecting both the global nature of civil engineering practice and the value of experiencing how infrastructure challenges are approached in different national contexts. You will build a thorough grounding in engineering science before specialising in the sub-disciplines that make up modern civil engineering. Structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics and hydrology, transportation engineering, and construction management will all feature as you develop the technical breadth the profession requires.
