BA Classical Civilisation with Study in Europe
About this course
Classical civilisation is the study of ancient Greece and Rome in the full breadth of their literary, historical, philosophical, artistic, and archaeological dimensions. It is not a narrow technical discipline but one of the most wide-ranging and integrative subjects available at university level, engaging with epic poetry, tragedy, comedy, philosophy, history, rhetoric, law, visual art, architecture, and the material culture of everyday life across a thousand years and the length and breadth of the Mediterranean world. The civilisations of Greece and Rome are not simply historical curiosities: they are the source of many of the conceptual frameworks, aesthetic ideals, political institutions, and philosophical questions that continue to shape Western and global culture today. At the University of Warwick, this four-year full-time degree offers a wide-ranging and flexible education in the literature, history, philosophy, languages, art, and archaeology of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. You will develop skills in critical analysis, close reading of literary and historical texts, visual interpretation of art and material culture, and sustained academic argument, building intellectual competences that are among the most versatile a university degree can provide. The third year is spent studying abroad at one of Warwick's partner universities in Europe, giving you the opportunity to engage with classical scholarship in a different national academic tradition and to develop the cross-cultural awareness that study abroad provides. A degree in classical civilisation provides an exceptionally strong foundation for a wide range of careers. The critical thinking, analytical writing, and cultural knowledge the degree develops are valued in law, the civil service, publishing, journalism, the arts, education, heritage and museums, and professional services. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in classical studies, ancient history, archaeology, ancient languages, art history, or related fields, building the specialist expertise needed for academic or curatorial careers. The training in reading, argument, and cultural analysis that the degree provides serves graduates well in virtually any professional context.
