BA Classical Studies
About this course
Classical studies is the investigation of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds, encompassing their history, literature, philosophy, art, religion, politics, and the material remains they left behind. The classical world is not merely of historical interest: it is the foundation of much of Western thought, law, political theory, literary form, and artistic tradition, and understanding it illuminates enormous swathes of the culture we inhabit today. Classical studies approaches this material across disciplines, combining historical analysis, literary interpretation, and the evidence of archaeology and visual culture. At Lincoln you will study this programme part time, giving you the flexibility to combine your studies with work or other commitments while working through the history, culture, and language of antiquity at a sustainable pace. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, ensuring that your academic study is connected to professional experience, whether in museums, heritage, education, or other relevant settings. Across the programme you will examine the major periods and themes of Greek and Roman history, engage with ancient literature in translation, and explore how the achievements and failures of antiquity have shaped and continue to influence the society in which we live today. The breadth of classical studies means you develop a genuinely wide range of analytical, research, and interpretive skills. Graduates of classical studies enter careers in the heritage sector, museums and archaeology, education, publishing, journalism, and the civil service. The analytical and research skills developed through the degree are valued across many organisations, and the cultural and historical literacy that classical studies provides is an asset in any role that requires deep contextual understanding. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in classical studies, ancient history, archaeology, or related humanities fields, and the degree provides a strong foundation for postgraduate research.
