About this course

Classical studies and philosophy is a combination that traces two of the most significant and enduring intellectual traditions in Western history back to their common roots. The ancient Greeks and Romans developed not only extraordinary literature, art, and political institutions but also many of the foundational questions of philosophy, about knowledge, ethics, metaphysics, and the good life, that philosophers continue to engage with today. Studying classical civilisation alongside philosophy means engaging with the origins of these traditions and tracing their development into the present. At Royal Holloway, this three-year full-time degree is structured with classical studies as the major element (75 per cent of the course) and philosophy as the minor (25 per cent), giving you a thorough engagement with ancient Greece and Rome across their literature, history, society, and culture, alongside an understanding of both ancient and modern philosophy. The classical studies component is enriched by philosophical methods of analysis and argument, and philosophy itself is illuminated by the historical context from which many of its central problems emerged. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you professional experience and international exposure alongside your academic study. Graduates from classical studies and philosophy programmes are highly regarded across many sectors. The combination of close reading, rigorous argumentation, historical knowledge, and philosophical analysis develops skills that are applicable in law, the civil service, journalism, publishing, education, heritage, and many other fields. The depth of engagement with foundational ideas and complex texts is particularly valued in roles that require sustained analytical thinking and persuasive communication. Postgraduate study in classics, philosophy, ancient history, or law is a natural continuation for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
