BSc Clinical Exercise Therapy
About this course
Clinical exercise therapy is a discipline concerned with the therapeutic use of exercise to prevent, manage, and rehabilitate a wide range of clinical conditions. Where sports science focuses on maximising performance in healthy individuals, clinical exercise therapy shifts the emphasis toward populations whose health and physical function are compromised by disease, injury, or disability. Practitioners work with people living with cardiovascular conditions, metabolic disorders such as diabetes, musculoskeletal problems, mental health conditions, and cancer, designing and delivering exercise programmes that are safe, evidence-based, and tailored to individual clinical circumstances. At the University of Bedfordshire, this part-time programme develops your understanding of exercise physiology, clinical pathophysiology, and therapeutic exercise prescription at a pace that can be fitted around other commitments. You will study the biological and physiological mechanisms through which exercise exerts its health effects, alongside the clinical conditions most amenable to exercise-based intervention. You will develop competence in assessing patients, designing progressive exercise programmes, monitoring responses, and adapting approaches in light of clinical feedback. The programme draws on Bedfordshire's strengths in sports science and health, and its focus on evidence-based practice reflects the growing role of exercise professionals within multidisciplinary health and rehabilitation teams. You will also develop an understanding of the professional and ethical frameworks within which clinical exercise therapists operate, including the importance of working within scope of practice and in close liaison with other healthcare professionals. Graduates of clinical exercise therapy go on to careers in cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation, diabetes management, cancer rehabilitation, mental health services, community health, and sport and exercise medicine. Many work within NHS services, leisure trusts, or private healthcare providers. Postgraduate study in exercise physiology, clinical exercise science, or health promotion is an option for those wishing to deepen their expertise or move into research.
