BA Communication, Media and Politics
About this course
Communication, media, and politics is an interdisciplinary degree that examines how political power and democratic culture are shaped by the media systems and communication practices through which information flows in contemporary societies. Political communication asks how politicians build public support, how journalism frames political reality, how social media is changing the dynamics of campaigns and movements, and how propaganda, spin, and disinformation operate alongside legitimate political speech. Media studies brings critical and analytical tools to bear on these questions, examining the institutional, economic, and cultural contexts that shape what we see and hear. At the University of Liverpool, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you a combination of substantial professional and international experience alongside the academic content. You will study political theory, media theory, political communication, journalism, digital media, public relations, and the sociology of news and information, developing both analytical understanding and the practical communication skills that careers in politics, journalism, and public affairs require. The placement year connects you to professional environments in broadcasting, political campaigning, government, or the media industry, while the year abroad gives you experience of different political communication systems and media cultures. A typical entry tariff of 136 points reflects the programme's accessibility. Graduates work in journalism, broadcasting, political campaigning, public affairs, public relations, the civil service, NGOs, think tanks, and the charitable sector. The combination of media and political literacy is particularly valued in a world where the boundary between these two spheres is increasingly blurred. Further study at master's level in politics, journalism, media studies, or political communication is a natural continuation for those who want to develop specialist expertise. The placement and year abroad experience significantly strengthens the graduate profile in a competitive field.
