BA Communications and English
About this course
Communications and English is a combination that reflects the reality of how language and media work in professional life. English study develops the ability to read closely, write with precision, and engage critically with how texts, from literary works to everyday documents, produce meaning and persuade audiences. Communications broadens this focus to encompass the full range of media and platforms through which messages are created and circulated today, from journalism and broadcasting to digital media, public relations, and corporate communications. Together, they prepare you for a professional world in which the ability to communicate effectively and to understand how communication works is a fundamental asset. At Nottingham Trent University, this programme is offered part-time, allowing you to develop both skills simultaneously while fitting study around other commitments. In the English strand, you will read and analyse texts across genres and periods, building the critical vocabulary and close reading skills that underpin strong writing and clear thinking. In the communications strand, you will explore media theory and practice, engage with journalism and digital content production, and examine how organisations and individuals communicate in different professional contexts. The programme includes a sandwich year in industry and work placement opportunities, giving you practical experience within a relevant professional environment and developing the professional skills and contacts that employers look for alongside academic achievement. Graduates move into careers in journalism, public relations, marketing communications, content creation, and editorial roles across a range of industries. Copywriting, media production, and digital communications are common destinations for those who developed strong practical skills alongside their analytical capabilities. Publishing, broadcasting, and roles in corporate communications teams at large organisations provide further opportunities. Teaching English or media at secondary level is another pathway. The part-time structure means many students are already working in adjacent fields and use the degree to develop or formalise skills they have begun to apply professionally.
