BSc Computer Games Production
About this course
Computer games production is the discipline concerned with organising, planning and managing the complex creative and technical process of making games. Where game design focuses on the creative concept and game development on the code and assets, production is the practice of bringing all of these elements together, managing teams, schedules, budgets and risks to deliver a finished product. It is a role that sits at the intersection of creative collaboration and project management, demanding both technical literacy and leadership skill. At the University of Portsmouth, this three-year programme prepares you for a career as a games producer or project manager in the games industry. You will develop an understanding of the full production pipeline, from concept and pre-production through to gold master and release, and you will study the tools and methodologies that professional studios use to manage that process. A sandwich placement year gives you the opportunity to gain real industry experience before you finish your degree, and a year abroad adds an international dimension to your studies. The programme includes work placement opportunities throughout, meaning your professional network and portfolio development can begin well before graduation. The games industry employs producers, project managers and production coordinators across studios of all sizes, from independent teams to major publishers. Graduates from this programme are well placed for roles in games production specifically, but the skills developed, including project planning, team leadership, risk management and stakeholder communication, are transferable to wider creative industries and technology sectors. Many graduates also pursue further study or move into related areas such as interactive media, app development or digital entertainment production.
