BSc Computer Science (Cyber Security)
About this course
Cyber security has become one of the defining challenges of the digital age. As more of the infrastructure of modern life, from banking and healthcare to energy networks and government services, depends on connected computer systems, the ability to identify vulnerabilities, protect data and respond to threats has become a critical professional competency. At the University of Kent, this three-year full-time degree specialises within computer science, applying the foundational knowledge of the discipline to the specific challenges of securing systems and protecting information in an environment where attackers are persistent, technically sophisticated and increasingly well-resourced. You will study the core content of computer science, including programming, algorithms, operating systems, networks and software engineering, before progressing to specialist cyber security content covering cryptography, network security, ethical hacking and penetration testing, security architecture, digital forensics and the legal and ethical frameworks governing security practice. Kent's programme develops both the technical skills to implement secure systems and the analytical mindset to think like an attacker, understanding what vulnerabilities exist and how they can be exploited in order to defend against them. A typical entry tariff of around 120 points is expected. Graduates work as cyber security analysts, penetration testers, security architects, digital forensics specialists, incident responders and information security managers across financial services, healthcare, government, defence, technology companies and critical infrastructure operators. The demand for skilled cyber security professionals consistently outstrips supply in the UK and globally, making graduates from strong programmes highly employable. Professional certifications and postgraduate study are natural further steps for those seeking senior technical roles or specialist expertise in areas such as malware analysis, threat intelligence or secure software development.
