About this course

Counselling and psychotherapy are relational practices built on the understanding that human beings change, heal, and grow through connection. At the heart of both disciplines is the therapeutic relationship: the quality of the encounter between counsellor and client, and the ways in which that relationship itself becomes the medium through which insight, change, and recovery are possible. Studying the theory and practice of counselling therefore means studying both psychology and the subtleties of human relating. At the University of Warwick, this part-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of counselling and psychotherapy, founded on relational principles that place the therapeutic relationship at the centre of everything. You will learn about and integrate into your own developing practice a range of therapeutic approaches, building a holistic way of working that can meet the needs of diverse clients, taking account of mental health complexities and cultural influences. The programme develops your academic, professional, and research skills alongside the personal development work that is essential for any practitioner who works with human suffering and growth. The part-time format allows you to engage with the demands of the programme while maintaining other commitments, which is particularly appropriate given the personal depth the course requires. Graduates of counselling and psychotherapy programmes work as counsellors and therapists in a wide range of settings, including the NHS and other mental health services, GP surgeries, employee assistance programmes, schools and universities, voluntary sector organisations, and private practice. The relational skills, self-awareness, and psychological understanding the programme develops are also valued in adjacent professions such as social work, coaching, occupational therapy, and education. Many graduates pursue further professional development through additional training, postgraduate study, or accreditation with relevant professional bodies in counselling and psychotherapy.
