BA Creative Practice
About this course
Creative practice is a broad and genuinely open designation that takes seriously the idea that creativity is a discipline in its own right, not just a property of particular art forms. It encompasses the development of creative thinking, practice-based research, making and crafting in different materials and media, and the critical and contextual understanding that allows practitioners to situate their work within wider cultural conversations. Programmes in creative practice are typically designed for students who have developed skills across more than one creative discipline and who want to continue exploring the intersections between them. At the University of the West of Scotland, this two-year full-time programme provides an intensive creative environment in which you develop your practice and your capacity to reflect critically on it. You will build on existing creative experience and interests, developing the technical and conceptual skills that enable you to work confidently across different forms and contexts. The programme supports you in developing a coherent creative identity and a body of work that demonstrates your range and depth, while also preparing you to engage with the professional dimensions of working as a creative practitioner. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points. Graduates of creative practice programmes go on to work as artists, makers, designers, creative educators, community arts workers, arts administrators, and creative freelancers across a wide range of contexts. The breadth of the creative practice approach means graduates are flexible and adaptable, able to apply their skills in different professional settings. Many also continue to postgraduate study in fine art, design, art education, or curatorial practice, using the two-year degree as a foundation for further specialist development.
