BA Creative Writing and Film and Television Studies
About this course
Creative writing and film and television studies is a combination that explores two of the most significant storytelling forms of our era alongside each other. Creative writing develops the craft of making original literary work across a wide range of genres and forms, from fiction and poetry through drama and screenwriting to creative non-fiction, asking you to read like a writer and to develop your own distinctive voice through sustained practice and critical reflection. Film and television studies takes the moving image seriously as an art form, cultural industry, and social force, asking how films and television programmes are made, how they construct meaning, and what they reveal about the societies that produce them. At Aberystwyth University, this three-year, full-time programme is delivered by award-winning writers and film scholars, giving you access to genuine creative expertise alongside serious critical analysis. You will develop confidence and competence across a variety of forms and genres, building a portfolio of creative work alongside critical and analytical skills in film and television. The combination is genuinely synergistic: understanding how narrative, character, and structure work in film illuminates your creative writing practice, and the discipline of making your own writing effective develops your appreciation of what makes cinematic storytelling work. A typical entry tariff of 136 points reflects a competitive but accessible admissions profile. Graduates from creative writing and film studies programmes go on to careers in screenwriting, scriptwriting, television development, literary publishing, journalism, arts administration, education, community arts, and a wide range of creative and cultural roles. The combination of practical creative skills and critical analytical understanding is valued across the creative industries and in roles that require both making and thinking about cultural content. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in creative writing, screenwriting, or film studies, while others develop careers as writers, editors, or screen industry professionals.
