BA Creative Writing and Media
About this course
Creative writing and media studies occupy a unique territory where imaginative practice meets critical inquiry. Writers who understand how stories are produced, distributed and consumed are better placed to shape culture, and this joint honours degree at York St John University invites you to develop both skills in tandem. You will grow as a writer while also learning to analyse and question the wider media landscape that surrounds you. On the creative side, you will explore poetry, fiction, screenwriting, and other forms, developing your voice and learning to give and receive rigorous editorial feedback. The media strand asks you to think carefully about how texts are constructed, how platforms shape audiences, and how industries work. Together, the two disciplines reinforce each other: the critical thinking sharpens your craft, and the practice of writing deepens your understanding of how media operates. Because this programme runs part time, you can balance your studies with work or other commitments, and a foundation year is available if you want to build confidence before progressing to degree-level work. There are also opportunities for a sandwich year in industry and a year abroad, as well as work placement experience, all of which help you connect your academic learning to professional contexts. Graduates from programmes combining creative writing and media move into a broad range of roles. Publishing, journalism, content strategy, copywriting, social media management, screenwriting, and broadcasting are all natural destinations. The analytical skills you develop are equally valued in communications, public relations, policy, and education. Many graduates also continue to study at postgraduate level, pursuing MFAs in creative writing or research degrees that investigate media, culture, and society. What both strands share is an insistence that language and narrative are powerful tools, and the ability to wield them with intention and awareness is increasingly sought after across every sector.
