BA Creative Writing and Psychology
About this course
Creative writing and psychology is a combination whose connection runs deeper than it might initially appear. Storytelling is a fundamentally psychological activity: writers construct characters with inner lives, motivations, and emotional histories, and they use narrative to explore the full range of human experience. Psychology, in turn, offers writers a rigorous scientific framework for understanding consciousness, emotion, memory, perception, and behaviour, and for thinking about what makes people do what they do. The two disciplines are genuinely mutually enriching. At Liverpool Hope in a city with a rich literary tradition you will develop your craft as a writer across fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and screenwriting alongside a grounding in psychological science. Creative writing will develop your ability to write with precision, imagination, and emotional truth, and to find your own distinctive voice across multiple forms. Psychology will give you the scientific understanding of human cognition, development, emotion, and behaviour that informs the construction of convincing and complex fictional minds. You will also engage with the psychology of creativity itself, asking how imagination works and what conditions allow it to flourish. The three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, giving you professional experience in a creative or psychological context and an international dimension to your studies. Graduates pursue careers in writing, publishing, journalism, education, counselling and therapeutic support roles, communications, and the creative industries. The combination of creative and analytical skills is also valued in roles involving research, human insight, and communication across professional contexts. Many students continue to postgraduate study in creative writing, psychology, or education.
