BA Criminology and Sociology
About this course
Criminology and sociology together examine the social world from two related but distinct vantage points. Sociology is concerned with how society is organised, how institutions and structures shape individual lives, and how inequalities of class, race, gender, and other dimensions are produced and maintained. Criminology uses many of the same theoretical tools to focus specifically on crime as a social phenomenon, asking who commits crime, who is defined as criminal, how the criminal justice system works, and what the social consequences of crime and punishment are. This three-year, full-time programme at Anglia Ruskin engages you with the most current ideas, issues, and debates in both disciplines, covering topics that include the media and moral panics, sexual violence and offender profiling, youth offending, war, terror and genocide, and the broader question of how societies construct and respond to deviance. The combination gives you a specialist perspective on crime that is grounded in wider social theory, allowing you to understand offending and justice not as isolated phenomena but as expressions of deeper social processes and power relations. Graduates of criminology and sociology programmes move into careers in the criminal justice system, social work, probation, community safety, victim support, youth work, housing support, and voluntary sector organisations working with vulnerable groups. The analytical and research skills developed also support careers in policy, public administration, journalism, and research organisations. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in criminology, sociology, social policy, or social work, pursuing professional qualifications or academic careers. The breadth of the combination makes it a versatile foundation for any career that involves working with people and communities affected by crime, inequality, or social disadvantage.
