BSc Criminology
About this course
Criminology is the academic discipline that examines crime as a social phenomenon: why it occurs, who commits it, who is most affected by it, and how society responds through the systems of law enforcement, prosecution, punishment, and rehabilitation. It draws on sociology, psychology, law, and political science to ask critical questions not only about offenders but about the institutions and policies that define crime and shape justice. This three-year full-time programme at the University of Chester includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study crime and justice in a different national context and to develop a comparative understanding of how different societies approach these questions. You will study criminological theory from classical deterrence to contemporary critical and feminist perspectives, the sociology of deviance, policing and its contested history, criminal justice processes and institutions, victimology, and comparative and international criminology. Research methods are a core component of the programme, developing your ability to design and conduct investigations, work with crime data, and evaluate claims about what the evidence says. The year abroad takes your studies to a partner institution abroad, where you may encounter very different academic traditions and very different criminal justice systems, all of which deepens your analytical understanding. Criminology graduates pursue careers across the criminal justice system, in probation and prisons, youth offending, the police, legal services, and the voluntary and charitable sector. Many work in victim support, community safety, housing support, and organisations focused on reducing reoffending and supporting rehabilitation. Others move into social research, policy analysis, journalism, and teaching. Postgraduate study in criminology, social policy, forensic psychology, or law is a natural progression for those who want to specialise or pursue research, and Chester's programme provides a strong academic foundation for any of these routes.
