BA Czech and Spanish
About this course
Czech and Spanish is a language combination that brings together a Central European Slavic language with one of the world's most widely spoken Romance languages. Czech is the language of the Czech Republic, a country at the geographical and cultural heart of Europe with a rich literary tradition, a complex twentieth-century history, and a growing role in European economic and political life. Spanish is spoken by more than 450 million people across Europe, Latin America, and the United States, and it opens access to one of the most diverse and culturally significant language communities in the world. Studied together at UCL, they provide an exceptionally broad linguistic and cultural education. This four-year full-time programme at University College London is taught within one of the UK's leading modern languages departments. You will develop proficiency in both Czech and Spanish, studying grammar, spoken and written communication, and the literary and cultural traditions of the Czech-speaking and Spanish-speaking worlds. Immersion experience, typically through time abroad in Czech-speaking and Spanish-speaking countries, is central to reaching the level of fluency that the programme expects. UCL's location in London provides access to both Czech and Spanish-speaking communities and to the international professional networks where these languages are most valuable. Graduates from this programme pursue careers in translation and interpretation, international business, diplomacy, journalism, the law, international organisations, and academic research. The Spanish component opens the widest possible range of international opportunities, while the Czech component gives graduates a distinctive edge in Central European affairs, EU institutions, and organisations working in the region. Postgraduate options include Slavic studies, Hispanic studies, translation studies, European studies, and international relations, and UCL's resources support advanced study in all of these areas.
