BA Czech (with Slovak) and East European Studies
About this course
Czech and East European Studies is a degree that takes you into one of the most fascinating and consequential regions of the modern world. Central and Eastern Europe, spanning the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and the broader post-communist space, has been at the centre of some of the twentieth century's defining events, from the rise and fall of communism to the democratic transitions of 1989 and the subsequent integration of many of these states into the European Union. Understanding this region demands linguistic engagement, because Czech and Slovak are Slavonic languages that open access to cultures, literatures and historical records that are largely unavailable in translation. At University College London, this four-year full-time programme develops your Czech language skills to an excellent level alongside the study of Slovak and a broad engagement with East European studies. UCL's School of Slavonic and East European Studies is one of the world's leading centres for the study of Central and Eastern Europe, with outstanding resources, specialist expertise and connections to the region. You will study Czech literature, history and culture in depth, developing a profound knowledge of the region alongside your language skills. The programme prepares you for a wide variety of careers in Europe and beyond, in contexts where genuine linguistic and cultural competence in this region is rare and therefore valuable. Graduates move into diplomacy, international business, journalism, translation and interpreting, research, the civil service, international organisations, NGOs and academic careers. The combination of language expertise and regional knowledge is particularly valued in organisations with interests in Central and Eastern Europe.
