MA Digital Media & Information Studies/ Latin
About this course
Digital media and information studies combined with Latin is an intellectually distinctive pairing that brings together the study of digital content, information, and their social impact with the deep linguistic and cultural tradition of classical Latin. Digital media and information studies is a contemporary field concerned with how digital content is created, circulated, and consumed, and with the human and social dimensions of the digital age: information ethics, digital culture, the politics of algorithms, and the role of media in shaping knowledge and identity. Latin provides access to one of the most influential intellectual and literary traditions in the history of western culture, through the primary sources of Roman law, history, philosophy, and literature. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme allows you to bring a humanistic perspective to the questions of the digital age while also engaging with the depth and precision that Latin scholarship demands. A year abroad is incorporated into the degree, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution overseas and to encounter both digital media and classical studies in an international context. You will develop skills in digital content analysis, information science, critical media theory, and ethical reasoning alongside the linguistic competence in Latin and the engagement with classical literature, philosophy, and history that the language component requires. The combination is unusual but produces graduates with a rare intellectual profile: able to think carefully about both contemporary information environments and the long history of ideas that has shaped them. Graduates go on to work in information science, digital communications, heritage and archives, research, teaching, journalism, and the cultural sector. The critical and analytical skills the degree develops are valued across a wide range of professional contexts. Postgraduate study in digital humanities, information studies, classical studies, or related fields is a natural continuation.
