MA Digital Media & Information Studies
About this course
The digital revolution has transformed how information is created, shared, stored, and used across every domain of human activity. Digital Media and Information Studies takes a humanistic perspective on this transformation, asking not just how digital technologies work but what they mean for culture, society, knowledge, and power. It is a discipline that brings critical thinking to the digital world, examining the conditions under which information is produced and circulated, the ways in which digital media shapes what people know and believe, and the consequences of living in an environment saturated with digital content. At Glasgow you will explore the creation, use, and impact of digital content and information across the arts, humanities, and society. You will study platforms, archives, algorithmic curation, digital journalism, information ethics, the politics of access, and the changing relationship between media and audiences, always asking the human questions that technical accounts of digital systems tend to leave aside. The programme develops both critical analytical skills and practical engagement with digital tools and methods, equipping you to work in environments where digital information is central. The four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to engage with digital media culture and information practices in a different national context. Graduates pursue careers in journalism and media, libraries and archives, cultural institutions, digital communications, technology policy, education, and research. The combination of humanistic critical thinking and digital fluency is increasingly valued in organisations navigating the challenges of the information age. Postgraduate study in digital humanities, information science, media studies, or librarianship is a natural progression.
