MA Digital Media & Information Studies/English Literature
About this course
Digital media and information studies combined with English literature brings together two disciplines that, in the contemporary world, speak to each other with increasing urgency. English literature involves the close, critical reading of texts across centuries and traditions, developing skills in interpretation, argument and cultural analysis. Digital media and information studies asks how the digital revolution has transformed how knowledge is produced, stored, shared and consumed, and what this means for culture, society and the ways we read and write. Together, the combination produces graduates who can think critically about both literary form and the media environments in which literature now circulates. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year programme allows you to explore all aspects of literature in English, from early modern to postmodern, benefiting from Glasgow's expertise across a broad range of literary traditions including American, Irish and postcolonial literatures, critical theory, creative writing and the relationships between literature, other arts, media and science. Alongside this, you will develop your understanding of digital media, information systems and the social and cultural implications of networked communication. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to pursue your studies at an international partner institution and develop new perspectives on both disciplines. Graduates from this combined programme are well positioned for careers in publishing, journalism, digital communications, content strategy, cultural heritage, education, media research and arts administration. The critical reading, clear writing and analytical skills developed through English literature are highly transferable, while the digital media dimension adds technical and cultural literacy that is increasingly valuable across professional contexts. Postgraduate study in literary studies, digital humanities, information science, journalism or media and communications is a natural next step for those who want to specialise.
