About this course

Digital media and information studies and politics is a combination that puts two of the most pressing fields of contemporary analysis in direct conversation with one another. Digital media and information studies examines how digital content and information are created, distributed, consumed, and regulated, bringing a human and critical perspective to questions about technology, communication, culture, and power in the digital age. Politics examines how power is organised, how governments and institutions make decisions, how political ideas contest one another, and how media and information environments shape democratic life. The intersection between these fields, how digital media transforms political communication, how information shapes political behaviour, and how platforms and algorithms interact with democracy, is one of the central questions of our time. At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme allows you to develop both disciplines alongside other commitments. Your digital media and information studies work will engage you with the creation and impact of digital content and information across the arts, humanities, and society, developing your critical understanding of the digital age and the tools to analyse it. Your politics studies will cover political theory, comparative politics, international relations, and public policy, giving you the frameworks to understand how political systems operate and how they are changing. A year abroad is part of the programme, giving you the opportunity to encounter both digital cultures and political systems in a different national context. You will develop skills in critical analysis, research, written argument, and digital literacy, alongside the broader capacity to think across disciplinary boundaries. Graduates go on to careers in journalism, political communications, public policy, digital content strategy, advocacy, research, and a range of roles in the public and voluntary sectors. Postgraduate study in politics, media studies, or digital humanities is a natural continuation.
