BA Drama and Music (With Foundation Year)
About this course
Drama and music are art forms that share a common ancestry in ritual, storytelling and communal experience, and studying them together gives you a richer understanding of both than either discipline would offer alone. Performance of all kinds, whether theatrical, musical or somewhere between the two, depends on timing, attention, collaboration and the ability to communicate across the space between performer and audience. This four-year full-time programme at Liverpool Hope University includes a foundation year and incorporates a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, providing an unusually complete preparation for professional and creative life in the arts. In the drama strand, you will explore the origins and development of theatre from ancient forms to contemporary practice, study dramatic texts and performance traditions, and develop your own work as a performer, director or deviser. The foundation year gives you the grounding in both disciplines to succeed in the degree proper if you are building on non-traditional qualifications or want to consolidate your background. In the music strand, you will study music history, theory, analysis and practical musicianship, developing both technical skill and critical understanding. Liverpool itself provides an exceptional context for both subjects, with a theatre and music scene of genuine national significance. A typical entry tariff of around 104 points is expected. Graduates work across the performing arts sector, in theatre companies, music production, arts education, community arts, festival management and cultural administration. The practical and critical skills the degree develops are also valued in the media, publishing and communications industries. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in performance, directing, music or related fields, while others move into the profession directly, drawing on the placement and placement-year experience they have built during the degree.
