About this course

Drama, theatre and performance is a discipline that brings together the scholarly analysis of dramatic texts and theatrical traditions with the practical experience of making and staging performance. It examines theatre as an art form with a history stretching across millennia and a contemporary practice that is as various as the cultures and communities it reflects, from ancient Greek drama and Elizabethan tragedy to contemporary devised work, site-specific performance and digital theatre. The discipline develops both critical intelligence and creative practice, asking you to engage with theatre from multiple perspectives: as a thinker, a maker and a performer. At the University of Lincoln you will have the opportunity to create, perform in and examine a broad and inspiring range of innovative theatre and performance practices from across a variety of styles, aesthetics and cultures. The programme runs full time over three years and includes a sandwich year and work-placement experience, giving you the opportunity to apply your practical and critical skills in a professional theatre or performance context during your studies. Working alongside professional theatre-makers, directors, designers or arts organisations is a formative experience that develops both your craft and your understanding of the professional landscape you are entering. You will develop skills in performance, directing, devising, text analysis, critical writing, collaboration and the practical disciplines of theatre-making, including voice, movement and design awareness. The programme aims to produce reflective practitioners who can contribute to theatre at a professional level. Graduates from drama, theatre and performance programmes pursue careers as actors, directors, theatre-makers, arts administrators, drama educators, community theatre practitioners, stage managers and audience development professionals. Many also enter the broader creative industries, where the collaborative, communicative and creative skills developed through theatre training are genuinely valued. Postgraduate study in theatre, performance studies or a related creative field is also an option.
