BA Dutch and History of Art
About this course
Dutch and History of Art is a combination that has a particular internal coherence, because the Dutch-speaking world has produced one of the richest visual art traditions in history. The Dutch Golden Age gave us Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Frans Hals; the Flemish tradition produced Van Eyck and Rubens; and the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries saw the emergence of Van Gogh, Mondrian, and the De Stijl movement. Studying Dutch alongside art history means you can engage with this tradition not only through critical analysis but through the language and cultural context in which it was created. At University College London, this four-year full-time programme develops advanced Dutch alongside rigorous training in how art is analysed, interpreted, and situated in historical context. UCL's Dutch department and its art history teaching are both well regarded, and you will develop the linguistic competence to read Dutch sources, criticism, and literature in the original alongside the visual and analytical skills to engage with the history of art across periods and cultures. The combination is not limited to the intersection of Dutch art and Dutch language: you will explore the full breadth of the art historical canon while developing genuine fluency in Dutch. Graduates from Dutch and History of Art move into a range of careers in culture, the arts, and beyond. Museums with Dutch and Flemish collections, auction houses handling works from this tradition, galleries, and arts organisations in the Netherlands and Belgium are natural employers. Art journalism, curatorial practice, cultural diplomacy, and publishing are further paths. The Dutch language itself opens professional doors in one of Europe's most prosperous economies, whether in business, journalism, or international organisations. Postgraduate study in art history, Dutch studies, or curatorial practice is a common next step.
