BA Dutch and Italian
About this course
Dutch and Italian is a language combination that spans two distinct but richly rewarding European literary and cultural traditions. Dutch is the language of the Netherlands and Flanders, of Rembrandt and Vermeer, of Spinoza and Erasmus, and of one of the world's most internationally oriented trading nations. Its literature, though less familiar to English-speaking audiences than French or German, is vibrant and historically significant. Italian is one of the great European languages, the direct descendant of Latin and the language of Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio, of the Renaissance, of opera, and of a contemporary literary and cinematic culture of the first order. At University College London this four-year full-time degree develops your proficiency and scholarly understanding in both languages, taking you from wherever you begin through the grammar, literature, and cultural history of each. You will engage with canonical texts and contemporary writing in both Dutch and Italian, developing the reading fluency, critical writing skills, and cultural knowledge that the study of literature in the original language requires. UCL has outstanding resources in both Germanic languages, which includes Dutch, and Italian, and the typical entry tariff of 168 points reflects both the competitive admissions context and the academic demands of the programme. Graduates with Dutch and Italian have an unusual profile in a job market where Dutch in particular is a relatively rare skill among British graduates. Careers in translation, international business, European cultural organisations, journalism, diplomacy, academic research, and publishing are all open to graduates of this combination. Italian skills are valued in fashion, food, design, luxury goods, legal work with Italian counterparties, and academic Italian studies. Dutch opens doors in the Netherlands and Belgium, two of the UK's most important trading partners. Postgraduate study in Dutch, Italian, comparative literature, or translation is available for those who want to pursue specialist or academic careers.
