About this course

Early childhood education and care is a degree that takes seriously the critical importance of the first years of a child's life, a period in which development is rapid, foundations are laid for later learning, and the quality of care and education children receive has profound long-term consequences. The field draws on developmental psychology, sociology, educational theory, and social policy to understand how young children learn and develop, what they need from the adults who care for them, and how services can best support children and their families. At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year programme gives you a thorough grounding in child development theory and in the practice of working with young children from birth to five years and beyond into the early primary years. You will study how children develop cognitively, linguistically, socially, and emotionally, and you will engage with the policy frameworks that govern early childhood education and care in England, including the Early Years Foundation Stage. Practice placements are a central component of the degree, giving you direct experience in a range of early years settings under supervision, and you will develop the practical skills needed to plan and deliver high-quality learning experiences for young children. Reflective practice is emphasised throughout, encouraging you to analyse and improve your professional approach on the basis of theory and evidence. Graduates from early childhood education and care programmes move into roles across the early years sector. Working in nurseries, children's centres, pre-school settings, and the early years of primary schools, graduates take on positions as educators, senior practitioners, and managers. The Graduate Lead Practitioner role in early years settings is a common destination, and with the Early Years Teacher Status qualification, which some degrees incorporate, graduates can lead teaching and learning in early years settings. Children's social work, family support roles, and early intervention services are further pathways. Policy, research, and advisory roles in local authorities and government also draw graduates from this background, as does leadership within the voluntary and private early years sector.
