BA Early Childhood Education (Graduate Practitioner)
About this course
Early childhood education is concerned with the development, learning and wellbeing of children from birth through to the early years of primary school. It is a discipline that draws on developmental psychology, pedagogy, sociology and public health to understand how young children grow, how they learn and how the environments and relationships around them support or hinder their development. The early years are recognised as among the most significant in human development, and the professionals who work in this phase have a profound influence on children's life chances. This three-year full-time degree at the University of Bedfordshire leads to the Graduate Practitioner qualification, which is a professional recognition for those who work directly with children in early years settings. The programme combines academic study of child development, early years pedagogy, safeguarding, play and curriculum theory with reflective engagement with professional practice. You will develop the knowledge and skills to support children's learning and development across the birth-to-five age range and into the early primary years, working within the frameworks and professional standards that govern early childhood education in England. Graduates work in early years settings including nurseries, children's centres, pre-schools, reception classes and childminding, as well as in early years support roles within primary schools. The Graduate Practitioner status provides professional recognition that is valued by employers in the sector. Many graduates go on to further professional development, including routes toward Qualified Teacher Status or specialist roles in special educational needs, family support and early intervention. Postgraduate study in early childhood education or education more broadly is an option for those who wish to develop leadership or research expertise in the field.
