About this course

Early Childhood Education is the study of how children learn, develop, and flourish in the earliest years of life, from birth through to around eight years of age. It is a discipline that brings together developmental psychology, educational theory, sociology, neuroscience, and policy analysis to understand what young children need, how they are best supported, and what factors shape their trajectories over time. The early years of life are now recognised as a period of extraordinary developmental significance: the quality of care, education, and relationships children experience in these years has long-lasting effects on their learning, wellbeing, and life chances. Early Childhood Education takes this seriously both intellectually and practically. At University College London, this three-year full-time programme is taught within one of the world's leading education research institutions. You will engage with the theoretical and empirical foundations of early childhood education, studying child development across cognitive, social, emotional, and physical domains; pedagogical approaches to learning in the early years; the design and evaluation of early childhood settings; and the policy frameworks that shape provision in the UK and internationally. UCL's Institute of Education has a deep research tradition in early childhood, and the programme draws on this to give you an understanding of the field that is both practically grounded and intellectually rigorous. You will develop skills in observation, research, critical analysis, and the ability to apply evidence to practice, which are all central to working effectively with young children and the families and communities around them. Graduates pursue careers as early years practitioners, nursery and reception teachers (often following a PGCE), educational researchers, policy advisers, child welfare professionals, and family support workers. Many go on to postgraduate study in early childhood, education, or child and family policy. The degree is a strong foundation for any career dedicated to the wellbeing and education of young children.
