About this course
Earth science is the study of the planet itself: its structure, its history, the processes that shape its surface and interior, and the resources and hazards it presents to human societies. It draws on geology, geophysics, geochemistry and environmental science to explain phenomena ranging from volcanic eruptions and earthquakes to the formation of mountain ranges and the long-term cycling of carbon through rocks, oceans and atmosphere. Understanding how the Earth works is not merely an academic exercise; it underpins efforts to find clean energy, manage mineral resources responsibly, plan against natural hazards and understand the deep drivers of climate change. At the University of Portsmouth, you will study how the planet's materials, structures and processes interact across geological time and human timescales. The programme is three years full time, with both a sandwich year placement and a year abroad available, alongside integrated work placement experience. These opportunities allow you to apply field and laboratory skills in professional contexts, whether working alongside consulting geologists, environmental agencies or research groups, and to gain international exposure to different geological settings and academic traditions. Field work is a core part of how earth scientists learn; reading landscapes and rock sequences in person develops observational and interpretive skills that no laboratory alone can provide. Earth science is critical for understanding how our planet works and how its resources can be used responsibly to ensure a sustainable future. It underpins current efforts to move to greener energy, understand and tackle the impacts of climate change, predict and plan against natural hazards, and build safe, sustainable and resilient cities. Careers open to graduates span energy (conventional and renewable), environmental consultancy, mining and mineral exploration, geotechnical and civil engineering support, water resources management, government agencies and academic research. Postgraduate study in geoscience, environmental management, hydrogeology or related fields is a common route for those wishing to specialise further.
