BSc Ecology
About this course
Ecology is the scientific study of how organisms interact with each other and with the physical environments in which they live. It asks how populations are regulated, how communities are assembled, how energy and nutrients flow through ecosystems, and how the abundance and distribution of species change in response to environmental conditions. These are not merely academic questions: understanding ecological processes is essential to addressing the global decline of biodiversity, managing natural resources sustainably, and responding effectively to climate change. At Aberystwyth University, this three-year full-time programme is explicitly designed to address the urgent demand for graduate ecologists, providing both the academic knowledge and the practical skills that the field requires. You will study population ecology, community ecology, ecosystem science, biogeography, conservation biology, and environmental change, developing a thorough understanding of how ecological systems work and how they can be monitored, managed, and protected. Field work is central to the programme: you will gain direct experience of ecological survey and sampling methods in real environments, developing the practical competence that professional ecologists need. You will also develop quantitative skills in data analysis and statistical modelling, as well as the scientific communication skills needed to write reports, present findings, and engage with policy and public audiences. Graduates are well prepared for careers in conservation organisations, wildlife trusts, environmental consultancy, ecological surveying, government agencies, environmental assessment, research, and education. The combination of theoretical knowledge and practical field skills the degree provides is particularly valued by employers in the conservation and environmental sectors. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, environmental management, or a related field.
