About this course

Economics and finance are disciplines with overlapping foundations and distinct emphases. Economics is concerned with how scarce resources are allocated, how markets function, how policies affect behaviour and welfare, and how economies grow and fluctuate. Finance examines the pricing of assets, the management of risk, the functioning of financial markets and the decisions made by firms, investors and governments about the use of capital. Studying them together gives you a thorough grounding in economic theory and quantitative method while developing the specialist financial knowledge that is directly applicable in banking, investment, corporate finance and economic policy. This three-year full-time degree at the University of East Anglia will take you from the core principles of micro and macroeconomics through to more advanced analytical tools, including econometrics, financial modelling and the mathematics of pricing and risk. You will develop strong quantitative skills alongside the ability to think clearly about real economic and financial problems. The programme builds on the university's tradition of rigorous applied economics, which means you will be expected to engage seriously with data and with evidence as well as with theory. Graduates work across a wide range of sectors. Banking, investment management, financial analysis, economic consultancy, the civil service, central banking, insurance, accounting and international finance all regularly recruit from economics and finance programmes. The quantitative skills the degree develops are particularly valued in roles that require modelling, forecasting and data analysis. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in economics, finance, financial economics or related fields, and the undergraduate degree provides strong preparation for master's programmes and professional qualifications in finance and accounting.
