About this course
Economics and mathematics form one of the most demanding and intellectually rewarding combinations available at degree level. Economics uses mathematical tools extensively, from calculus and statistics through to game theory and econometrics, and a joint programme allows you to develop the mathematical foundations at the same time and with the same rigour as the economic theory that depends on them. The result is a graduate who can engage with the most technically challenging areas of economic analysis and carry out original quantitative research. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme explores the global economy through both a social and financial lens, combining the kind of analytical depth that employers in finance, consultancy, and government consistently seek. You will study microeconomics and macroeconomics with a level of mathematical rigour that goes beyond what is possible in a single-honours economics degree, developing tools for modelling markets, analysing policy, and interpreting economic data. The mathematics curriculum reinforces and extends these skills, covering areas of pure and applied mathematics that are directly relevant to economic modelling as well as to broader quantitative problem-solving. In your third year you will spend a year abroad, gaining intellectual and personal breadth by studying in a different academic and cultural context.
