BSc Economics (Extended Degree)
About this course
Economics is the study of how societies allocate scarce resources, examining the decisions of individuals, businesses, and governments that together determine prices, incomes, employment, and the overall performance of economies. It combines rigorous mathematical and statistical analysis with engagement with some of the most important questions in public life, from monetary policy and fiscal strategy to inequality, trade, and the economics of environmental change. A degree in economics develops the analytical tools to evaluate complex systems and the quantitative skills to work with real-world data, making it one of the most flexible and highly valued qualifications in the graduate market. At the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, this programme is offered as an Extended Degree, running over four years rather than three, with additional academic support and preparation built into the extended structure to make the degree accessible to a broader range of students. The programme also includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, providing a rich range of professional and international experiences alongside the academic content. You will study microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, quantitative methods and econometrics, economic policy, and a range of specialist topics in applied economics, developing both the theoretical frameworks and the empirical skills that economists use to analyse real economic problems. Graduates in economics go on to careers in banking and financial services, economic consultancy, the civil service and government, international organisations, corporate strategy, and a wide range of other roles where analytical and quantitative thinking are valued. The extended degree structure and the placement and international experience components give graduates from Northumbria's programme a strong professional foundation alongside their academic qualification. Some continue to postgraduate study in economics, data science, finance, or public policy.
