BSc Economics
About this course
Economics is the study of how individuals, firms, and societies make choices under conditions of scarcity, and of the consequences those choices produce. It is simultaneously a social science, a quantitative discipline, and a framework for thinking about some of the most pressing questions in public life: why some countries are rich and others poor, how labour markets work, what causes financial crises, how trade shapes prosperity, and what governments can and cannot achieve through policy. The discipline develops a distinctive mode of reasoning that is applicable far beyond the classroom. At Swansea University, the BSc Economics degree provides a strong foundation in modern economic principles and the key issues shaping the global landscape. Teaching at Swansea is research-led, with academic staff who draw on scholarly expertise and real-world experience, giving you insights that connect economic theory with contemporary practice. You will study microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics as core foundations, learning both the theoretical models economists use to understand markets and behaviour and the statistical methods used to test those models against real data. The programme develops your quantitative reasoning alongside your ability to analyse policy, interpret evidence, and communicate economic arguments clearly. Graduates with a degree in economics are in strong demand across a wide range of sectors. Finance, banking, consultancy, government, the civil service, international organisations, and think tanks are all common destinations. The combination of analytical rigour, quantitative skill, and policy awareness that economics develops is valued in roles from financial analysis and economic consulting to data science and public administration. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in economics, finance, public policy, or related fields, and some pursue research or academic careers.
