About this course
Economics is one of the most versatile and intellectually rigorous of academic disciplines, concerned with how societies make decisions about the allocation of scarce resources and the consequences of those decisions. It examines the behaviour of individuals, firms, and governments through a combination of theoretical modelling and empirical analysis, and it has developed powerful frameworks for understanding markets, trade, inequality, growth, and the effects of policy. The questions economics addresses, from why poverty persists to how monetary policy affects employment, are among the most important facing the world today. At the University of Exeter, this three-year full-time programme is built around excellent teaching and genuinely engaging final-year modules that deepen your understanding and develop your passion for the subject. A sandwich year is incorporated into the programme, giving you the opportunity to work in an economics-related role before your final year. A year abroad is also available, and work placement is additionally part of the degree. These features mean that you can combine the depth of an Exeter economics education with substantial professional and international experience before you graduate. You will study microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and a range of applied fields including international economics, public economics, financial markets, and development. You will develop strong quantitative skills alongside the theoretical understanding that allows you to interpret and apply them, and the written and communication abilities that professional economic roles require. Graduates go on to work in financial services, economic consultancy, the civil service, international organisations, data analysis, corporate strategy, and a wide range of other sectors where analytical and quantitative capabilities are valued. Many pursue professional qualifications or postgraduate study in economics, finance, or public policy. The rigorous analytical training an economics degree provides is recognised and sought after across the graduate labour market.
