BSc Economics
About this course
Economics is sometimes described as the science of choice, but it is really the discipline that asks why the world is organised as it is and how it might be organised differently. From the price of milk to the consequences of the Euro crisis, from the causes of unemployment to the dynamics of global trade, economics provides the analytical frameworks and empirical tools to understand how individuals, firms, and governments make decisions and what the consequences of those decisions are for welfare, growth, and equality. It is a discipline that is both rigorously scientific in its methods and deeply concerned with questions of justice and human wellbeing. At the University of York, this three-year full-time programme develops both your theoretical grounding and your quantitative skills, preparing you to engage with economic questions at a professional or academic level. You will study microeconomics and macroeconomics in depth, alongside econometrics, economic history, and the application of economic thinking to specific areas such as health, labour, international trade, development, and public policy. A sandwich year in industry, a year abroad, and work placements are all available, giving you direct professional experience in economic research, policy, consultancy, or business settings and an international perspective on how economies work in different contexts. With a typical entry tariff of 152 UCAS points, this is a competitive programme at a well-regarded university. Economics graduates are among the most sought-after in the job market, pursuing careers in finance, banking, economic consultancy, government, international organisations, the civil service, business strategy, data science, and management. The combination of rigorous quantitative training and analytical thinking that a York economics degree develops is valued by employers across virtually every sector that involves evidence-based decision-making. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in economics, finance, public policy, or related fields.
