About this course

Education and mathematics is a combination that addresses two of the most foundational dimensions of intellectual development: how learning and teaching happen, and how quantitative and logical reasoning can be applied to understand and shape the world. Education studies examines the social, cultural, political and philosophical forces that shape learning and educational systems, asking what education is for, how it works, and how it can be improved for all learners. Mathematics develops rigorous analytical and problem-solving skills, the capacity for abstract reasoning and the quantitative competence that is increasingly central to a wide range of professional roles. At Liverpool Hope University this programme includes a foundation year and runs full time over four years in total. It also includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, giving you the opportunity to develop professional experience in educational, mathematical or related settings and to extend your learning in an international context. You will explore the personal, social, cultural and political forces that shape learning in the UK and worldwide, alongside the mathematical content needed to develop genuine quantitative competence and the confidence to apply mathematics in a range of contexts. You will develop skills in mathematical reasoning, data analysis, educational theory, research methods, critical thinking and professional communication. The combination of mathematical and educational understanding is particularly relevant to careers in teaching, educational research, policy and the many roles in business and the public sector where both analytical skill and educational awareness are valued. Graduates from education and mathematics programmes move into careers in teaching (with appropriate professional training), educational research, policy, learning support, data analysis, business analysis, financial services and a wide range of roles where both mathematical competence and educational knowledge are assets. Postgraduate study in education, mathematics, teacher training or a related field is also a natural route.
