BA Education with Psychology
About this course
Education with psychology brings together two disciplines that are deeply interconnected: understanding how people learn, how they develop, and what motivates or hinders them requires both educational theory and psychological science. Education examines how learning is structured, how schools and other educational institutions function, and what policy and practice can do to improve outcomes. Psychology provides the scientific tools to understand the mental processes, social dynamics, and individual differences that shape learning at the level of the person. At the University of Huddersfield this three-year full-time programme develops both strands in a programme that is directly relevant to anyone interested in teaching, educational support, child development, or the many professional roles that sit at the boundary of education and wellbeing. You will study child and adolescent development, educational psychology, learning theory, social influences on educational achievement, mental health and wellbeing in educational contexts, and the research methods needed to evaluate evidence in both fields. The combination encourages you to connect what you know about how minds work with what you understand about how schools and educational systems function. The degree prepares you well for roles that involve direct work with children and young people, as well as for postgraduate training routes into teaching or psychology. Graduates go on to careers in education support, teaching (typically following a PGCE), educational psychology (with further postgraduate training), school counselling, SENCO roles, youth work, and community education. The combination of educational and psychological knowledge is also relevant to roles in public health, social care, and policy, wherever understanding human development in context is professionally important. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in education, psychology, or social work.
