BEng Electronic and Computer Engineering
About this course
Electronic and computer engineering sits at the boundary where the physical world of circuits, signals and hardware meets the logical world of algorithms, software and computing systems. Electronics provides the physical infrastructure on which all digital systems depend, from the silicon at the heart of a processor to the radio circuits that carry wireless communications, while computer engineering addresses how those physical components are programmed, interconnected and organised to perform useful computation. Together they describe the engineering knowledge needed to design and build the intelligent, connected systems that define contemporary technology. At the University of Kent you will develop competence across both fields over a four-year full-time programme, building from strong foundations in circuit theory, digital systems and programming through to advanced topics in embedded systems, communications, signal processing and computer architecture. You will learn to understand, design and create real electronic and computing systems, applying theoretical knowledge through practical laboratory work and design projects that give you hands-on experience with real engineering tools and methods. The programme develops your ability to move between hardware and software perspectives, to analyse complex systems at multiple levels of abstraction, and to apply engineering judgement to design problems with competing constraints. You will also develop the professional and communication skills that are central to working effectively as an engineer in collaborative, multi-disciplinary teams. Graduates from electronic and computer engineering programmes move into careers in electronics design, embedded systems engineering, telecommunications, software engineering, semiconductor development, aerospace and defence, automotive systems and the technology industry more broadly. The four-year BEng programme also provides a foundation for postgraduate study leading to MEng or MSc qualifications, or for progression into research and development roles.
