About this course

Electronic engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, development and testing of devices, systems and software that process, communicate or store electrical signals. It encompasses analogue and digital circuits, signal processing, power electronics, semiconductor devices, embedded systems, telecommunications and control systems, and increasingly it engages with quantum devices, nanotechnology and sustainable energy systems. As the world depends ever more heavily on electronic infrastructure, the engineer's ability to design robust, efficient and innovative electronic systems is central to technological progress. At the University of Southampton, this four-year full-time integrated masters degree combines foundational electronic engineering training with advanced study in areas including quantum devices, nanotechnology, sustainable energy and data security. You will design, build and test your own electronic systems, including a substantial project that addresses a real-life engineering problem. The integrated masters format means that you graduate at masters level, providing deeper technical training than a standard bachelor's degree and stronger preparation for research and advanced professional roles. With a typical entry tariff of 216 UCAS points, this is a highly competitive programme at one of the UK's leading engineering schools. The sandwich year in professional placement and a work placement give you direct industry experience that is highly valued by employers. Electronic engineering graduates from a programme at this level enter some of the most technically challenging roles in industry and research, including advanced circuit design, systems integration, research and development in quantum and nano electronics, telecommunications and defence. Professional registration pathways are available through the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Many graduates also pursue doctoral research, and the integrated masters provides excellent preparation for that pathway.
