About this course
Electronic engineering shapes nearly every aspect of contemporary life. The devices we communicate through, the systems that control power grids, the sensors embedded in vehicles, and the circuits that process medical data all depend on the work of electronic engineers. The discipline combines fundamental physics with applied mathematics and practical design, asking you to understand how electronic components behave and how to arrange them into systems that perform reliably in the real world. It covers analogue and digital electronics, signal processing, communications, and increasingly the intersection of hardware with embedded software. At Bangor University you will study this three-year full-time programme, with a foundation year available for those who want to consolidate their mathematics and science preparation before entering the main degree. The course includes a year abroad, giving you the chance to broaden your technical education in an international setting and develop the adaptability that employers in a global industry value. You will move from the fundamentals of circuit theory and electromagnetic principles through to more advanced topics including programmable systems, communications engineering, and electronic design. Practical laboratory work runs throughout the degree, developing your ability to build, test, and troubleshoot electronic systems and to translate theoretical understanding into working designs. Electronic engineering graduates are sought after across an extraordinarily wide range of sectors. Roles in telecommunications, consumer electronics, defence and aerospace, automotive systems, medical devices, and renewable energy are all open to you. Graduate positions include electronics design engineer, systems engineer, embedded software engineer, and RF engineer. The analytical and problem-solving skills the degree develops are also valued in technical consultancy, project management, and product development. Those who wish to deepen their expertise can pursue postgraduate study towards a master's degree or an EngD, and the degree provides a foundation for eventual chartered engineer status through the relevant professional bodies.
