About this course
Electronic engineering is the discipline concerned with the design and development of electronic circuits, systems and devices, from the individual components on a microchip through to the complex communication, control and power systems that underpin modern infrastructure. It encompasses analogue and digital electronics, signal processing, communications, embedded systems, control engineering and the software that makes hardware intelligent. The field powers everything from smartphones and medical devices to renewable energy systems and autonomous vehicles, making it one of the most consequential engineering disciplines in the contemporary economy. At the University of Essex, this three-year full-time degree builds a strong foundation in both core engineering principles and the computational methods that are increasingly central to electronic systems design. You will study circuit theory, electronic devices, digital systems, signal processing, communications engineering and computer architecture, developing the ability to design, analyse and evaluate electronic systems and to work with the software tools that professional engineers use. You will also build skills in problem-solving and system integration, understanding how individual components combine into functional and reliable systems. Electronic engineering graduates are employed across a wide range of industries, including telecommunications, semiconductor design and manufacture, defence, consumer electronics, automotive electronics, renewable energy, medical devices and research.
