BEng Engineering and Management
About this course
Engineering and management is a degree that addresses a gap that matters enormously in modern industry. The world needs people who understand both the technical realities of engineering and the organisational, strategic and commercial dimensions of running engineering enterprises. Technical ability without management understanding limits how far an engineer can lead and influence. Management education without technical grounding can leave business leaders unable to engage credibly with the engineers and systems they oversee. This degree develops both, and produces graduates who can operate at the boundary. At Exeter, this three-year full-time programme covers the core engineering principles alongside a management curriculum that develops your understanding of strategy, finance, operations, leadership and organisational behaviour. You will engage with real engineering challenges and learn to think analytically about systems, processes and technical problems, while also developing the business acumen and people skills that engineering managers need. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you structured professional experience in industry. This is an important part of the degree, as the combination of technical and managerial knowledge is most compelling to employers when it is accompanied by evidence of how that knowledge works in practice. Graduates move into roles across engineering sectors and industries, including manufacturing, energy, infrastructure, technology, aerospace and the built environment. Project management, operations management, technical consultancy and engineering leadership are common destinations. The combination of skills is also valued by management consultancies, infrastructure funds and technology companies that need people who can bridge technical and commercial worlds. Many graduates pursue professional engineering accreditation alongside their careers, and postgraduate study in engineering management or business administration is a natural option.
