English and film and television at Nottingham Trent University is a combination that takes both forms of storytelling seriously as disciplines in their own right, whilst encouraging you to think about the relationship between literary and screen narratives, the different conventions and possibilities of the written word and the moving image, and the ways in which both have shaped and reflected cultural life. Film and television studies examines screen texts as cultural artefacts, applying theoretical frameworks drawn from semiotics, psychoanalysis, sociology, and cultural studies to understand how films and television programmes work and what they mean. This part-time programme at Nottingham Trent includes a sandwich year with a work placement, giving you structured professional experience alongside your academic study. You will develop close reading and analytical skills applied to both literary and screen texts, build a working knowledge of the histories of literature and cinema, and engage with the major theoretical perspectives that animate scholarship in both fields. Practical modules may offer the chance to develop your own creative and critical writing, and the work placement gives you direct experience in a relevant professional environment, whether in publishing, broadcasting, education, the arts, or related fields.
