BA English and French
About this course
English and French is a degree that places two of the most significant literary and cultural traditions of the modern world in productive dialogue. English literature trains you to read closely, analyse complex texts, and construct arguments about how language and narrative shape the way we make sense of experience. French language study develops your linguistic competence to a high level while engaging you with a literary and cultural tradition of extraordinary richness, from medieval poetry and the classical theatre of Moliere to the existentialists, the New Wave, and contemporary Francophone writing from across the world. Studied together, the two disciplines develop an unusually wide and rigorous set of analytical and communicative skills. The four-year full-time English and French programme at the University of Warwick gives you the opportunity to explore connections and interactions between these two major literary and cultural traditions, developing your linguistic and analytical skills in close dialogue. The programme offers a rich range of content reflecting the diverse cultures, histories, and societies of the English and French-speaking worlds. A sandwich year and work placement options provide professional experience before you graduate, which is particularly valuable for developing your French language skills in a real working environment and for building the professional credentials that distinguish you in a competitive graduate market. With a typical entry tariff of 168 points, the programme attracts students who are serious about both literature and language. Graduates from English and French programmes pursue careers in publishing, journalism, education, the diplomatic service, law, international organisations, arts administration, and a wide range of professional roles where the combination of critical literacy and language skill is valued. Postgraduate study in literature, linguistics, translation, or cultural studies is also a well-travelled path.
