MA English and German
About this course
English and German at the University of Aberdeen brings together two of the most intellectually rich literary traditions in the world, within what the university describes as its highly rated research environment for English literature, language, and creative writing. English literature encompasses the full span of writing in the language from Anglo-Saxon origins through to contemporary global fiction, poetry, and drama; German carries you into the philosophy and literature of Goethe, Schiller, Brecht, Kafka, and Thomas Mann, the intellectual traditions of German idealism and critical theory, and the contemporary cultural life of one of Europe's most significant countries. Studying both over a seven-year programme gives you an exceptional depth of dual competence. You will develop your understanding of English literature and language within European, historical, and contemporary contexts, enriched by the perspective that German literary and intellectual study provides. The programme is designed for students who want to take both disciplines seriously, developing genuine expertise in each while also discovering the connections and comparative insights that emerge when the two are studied together. The creative arts and media orientation suggested by the programme reflects the particular strengths of the English strand and the international dimensions that German adds. A typical entry tariff of 168 UCAS points reflects the academic selectivity of the combined programme. Graduates from English and German programmes at Aberdeen are well placed for careers in journalism, publishing, translation and interpreting, the creative industries, academia, education, the diplomatic service, and international business. Many continue to doctoral research in English, German, or comparative literature, or to professional work in the cultural and creative sectors.
