MA English and Sociology
About this course
English and sociology is a combination that brings together two disciplines concerned, in different but complementary ways, with how human experience is made, communicated, and shaped by the world we inhabit. English literature develops your capacity to read texts closely and critically, to engage with narrative, language, and form, and to understand how writing reflects and influences the cultures and historical moments that produce it. Sociology asks how social structures, institutions, and inequalities shape human lives, and why societies take the forms they do. Together, they give you a rich set of lenses for understanding human experience in both individual and collective terms. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year, full-time programme draws on a department of English with exceptional research strengths in literature, language, and creative writing alongside a sociology department concerned with the broad sweep of social life. You will develop your critical reading and writing skills across a wide range of literary periods and genres while also engaging with sociological theory, research methods, and the analysis of contemporary social issues. A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to study in another country and to bring a comparative perspective to both your literary and sociological thinking. The degree develops skills in close reading, sustained argument, research, and clear written and oral communication that are transferable across many professional fields. Graduates go on to careers in education, journalism, publishing, social work, the civil service, public policy, the charity sector, and community development. Many continue to postgraduate study in English, sociology, creative writing, journalism, or social policy, and some pursue research careers in disciplines that sit at the intersection of literature and society.
